It is officially crunch time, in my opinion, can’t complain cause I’m doing pretty good. Shopping is done, well gift shopping, I still need to hit the grocery store one more time to pick up a few things for Christmas and Christmas Eve dinners. I have been cooking since last Thursday, party here, pot luck there and a few yummy treats to give away. I may bake a few cookies if I have time, but every year I make homemade beef jerky. I don’t even eat meat any more but, everyone seems to love it so, I make it for them. Plus it’s nice to break up all the usual sweets with a little savory, and I try to change things up flavor wise each year. This year in addition to the usual steakhouse flavor, I also made a Thai Chili, I like trying out different flavors. I have done barbeque, Smokey maple, Hawaiian, jerk and one or two others I can’t think of at the moment. I always have to make sure I plan ahead because although it is simple and requires little effort it does take two days to make. I always let the meat marinate for a day and then it takes another day in the dehydrator. I started this batch on Saturday and it will be ready to bring to work and to give out today.

I may be buying food the next two days because I need a short break from all the cooking, and the worst part, the clean up. I really love to cook, but I don’t like the mess it can cause, so when I’m short on time stopping at the grocery store to pick up something premade is a life savor, and it beats the pants off of fast food. All that remains after that is wrapping. I think I am more than half way done, but each year I seem to find all these little things I stashed away.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel; I took a few days off in between the holidays so two more days of work then 5 off, with the weekend. I also took the day after New Year’s for one more long weekend. I’m quite excited about that, and it will give me some time to work on a few projects I need to get moving on.

Good luck finishing up and have a wonderful holiday

happy thanksgiving

OK so it’s like officially the holiday season now right? Thanksgiving is this Thursday and then the crazy holiday shopping begins. I for one never go Black Friday shopping, I don’t like crowds, I’m not a big fan of waiting in line and I never feel like I need anything so bad that I have to get up at 3 A.M.to get it. I know some people have elevated to shopping that day to an art form and I can totally appreciate that, however I myself do not participate. I will check out some Cyber Monday deals but I don’t make myself too crazy about it.

This year I was very happy to see that some of the stores that were previously opening on Thanksgiving night the past few years are closed this year. Everyone deserves to have a holiday and spend time with loved ones. I have a feeling that the real reason they stopped was because it wasn’t profitable, but whatever gives more people off is a good thing.

My life tends to get a bit hectic this time of year, but who’s doesn’t, still I do have so much to be thankful for ,and quite a bit to celebrate. First off I am thankful that I don’t have to make anyone else’s lunch this week, but my own, love half days. That gives me extra time in the morning. Next I am thankful that there will be no traffic on my way to work on Friday, not thrilled about having to work but at least no traffic, again more time in the morning. I am thankful for extra days off, I have some vacation time left around Christmas and New Years, just a few days but it makes for long weekends. Very seriously though, I am thankful for my health and well being, having this makes the rest of life easier and more enjoyable. I am thankful for my wonderful family, immediate and extended, I am truly lucky to have so many wonderful, helpful, and truly caring people in my life. I know that no matter what happens I will always have help to get through. The holidays for me have always been about family, and no matter how crazy it gets, making plans, traveling, cooking and shopping I don’t have much I would change.

So before you let yourself get to crazy, stop for a moment and count your blessings, remind yourself why you are doing all of this, and then take a deep breath and maybe smile.  There is fun to be had amidst the chaos, so seek it out and enjoy yourself. Remember to treat yourself to something special for all of your efforts, you deserve it.

Bring on the Holidays!

It’s been quite a while since the mall was my favorite place to go, and I am pretty sure it will never be again. It is however my 14 year old daughter’s number one top pick, so I have been spending more and more time there with her. Lucky for me most times it’s just drop off and pick up, but when it’s time for season changes and a new wardrobe well mom’s all in. So off to the mall I go ,I do like spending time with my daughter and if I pick a time limit or a number of stores limit it keeps me from getting cranky and we can enjoy our time together. There are a few stores I absolutely refuse to go into with her ,and I wait outside until she has her cloths picked then I only come in to pay. You would think that a store that sells teen cloths would be a bit more parent friendly. They would make more money if the people with the cash actually went into the store. Many times I have sat outside Hollister with a large group of parents who simply can’t stand going in there to shop.

So the point is to spend some quality with my kid doing something she loves we set some limits so we can both enjoy ourselves and have a good time together. She knows now that if you don’t push mom to the breaking point with marathon shopping mom doesn’t lose it and cut the trip super short. I learned to set the limits and make them clear to her so she isn’t confused when mom has reached the limit and starting to get angry. WE had a few trips where she would want to shop all day and I just didn’t have the time, I would say let’s go she would push it and it wouldn’t end well. So now before we go limits are clearly defined, time ,money, and what stores we hit, I have to say we have a much better time shopping together than we ever did and I and glad. I still don’t love the mall but I don’t hate it as much.
